Original Sewing & Quilt Expo Runway Re-View Exhibit

I mentioned in this post that I was asked to create a project for the Original Sewing & Quilt Expo Runway Re-View exhibit.

I had less than a week to work on it before it had to be received back in the Expo offices and that included the Independence Day Holiday.

Can we say, RUSH JOB, boys and girls?

Aqua ribbon, Susan Lenart Kazmer Industrial Chic element

So I started digging around the studio to see what I had on hand in my hoard supplies.

I found a spool of this lovely aqua ribbon and a left over pieces from my Industrial Chic Blog Hop goodies and a whole, big box of children’s clothing that was once worn by my husband and his sister 50+ years ago.

mixed media, fabric, vintage clothing,

I cut things apart, I colored an underskirt with product from Jacquard, created a tulle crinoline, cut apart a blouse and pleated it for trim and scavenged the trim from an old table cloth.

upcycled vintage clothing

A sleeve from a blouse as a collar, a child’s dress cut down to doll size and a very old cameo button for the top.

My original train of thought was “What if Jane Austen was a gypsy?” and I had planned to go darker with a lot of the elements. But in using what I had on, in the time frame I had, hand I ended up with something sweeter. A little more actual Jane Austenesque.

A little bird told me that my project was the only project (at that time) that had actual clothing on it. The birdy said that all the others were decoupaged and glued on.

I’m not sure if that is good or bad. It kind of freaked me out a little bit but then I decided that “It is what it is”.

And, you know what really matters? I had a lot of fun making it.

In fact, I’ve already picked up another one of the dress forms and I’m going to see what else I can come up with.

Just for fun.

Here is a list of the Original Sewing & Quilt Expo Events… if you see my dress I’d love to have a photo. Pretty please? I might even send you a little THANK YOU for it. :)
