Crochet a Natural Hemp Loofah

Funny how they wake up when we stop…

Getting to your vacation destination by car has its pros and cons. It’s nicer when your children are older because they pretty much sleep entertain themselves.

On the other hand, that leaves me with a lot of sitting time and not much to do.

I can’t read in the car because it makes me ill but I can crochet so I often take several small skeins of yarn and a hook along. I work on smaller projects like Crochet Dishcloths or Granny Squares when we travel. They don’t take up much space, they don’t take much thought and it’s easy to pack everything into a small tote bag that can be quickly scooped up and carried away.

Like when you stop for a hot dog at Hot Dog Johnny’s so your husband can share a stop he often made with his parents and sister growing up.

Another small craft to make while traveling is a Natural Hemp Loofah.

Nothing cleans feet that have run around all day barefoot (or in sandals) like a natural hemp loofah.

I create them the same way I do a dishcloth. Thirty chain stitches and then several rows of whatever stitch I’m practicing at the moment until I get it to the size I want. I usually finish with 10 or so chain stitches and then use that to create a loop for hanging.

See what I mean about very little thought?

The hemp yarn in the above photo is pretty thick but hemp comes in lots of different thicknesses. Hemp Basics has a page showing some of the different thicknesses of hemp yarn. (I’m not necessarily promoting the company, just sharing the information about hemp yarn)

One of the things I like to do that may seem kind of silly to you is to take a few natural hemp loofahs that I have made up and “charge” them in sea water. I don’t know- the sea seems magical to me and I know it has natural healing in it so it seems rather intuitive to me to do that. It’s ok, you can think I’m weird. I like to soak a few of these in the ocean, hang them to dry in the ocean breeze, and take some of that back home with me.

I remember the first time I tried one of these loofahs when I got back home and finished up my shower to find that there was sand in the bottom of the bath tub. It made me smile and remember the fun we’d had at the shore.

So what do you think about creating your own loofah? Do you think you’ll give it a try?

P.S. I find it interesting that Hemp Basics is based in Warren, NJ and that my husbands’ name is Warren and he was raised in New Jersey. AND Buttzville, NJ is in Warren County, NJ.

P.P.S. Crocheting with hemp will DEFINITELY smooth the skin on your hands/fingers too!

P.P.P.S. The natural hemp dries quickly after it’s wet so you are less likely to get creepy things growing in your handmade loofahs. Unlike the tulle/net poufs that take FOREVER to dry at the center allowing goddessknowswhat to grow there. Eww!

I totally need to make some of these – I love loofahs and love the exfoliating power of hemp loofahs! And I am all for taking my girls to some of the same places I went as a kid…like MF (Magic Fountain – ice cream shakes) or the Candy Man…for the best handmade chocolate covered marshmallows! Every stop is worth a thousand memories! -kg
