Tips and Tricks for Peeling Peaches and Tomatoes

As part of what is turning into “Canning Week” I thought I’d share another tip with you…

The EASIEST way to peel peaches is to submerse them in boiling water for 30-60 seconds and then submerse them in a bowl of cool water.

You can do this in small batches.

Put 6-8 peaches in the pot, wait 60 seconds and then scoop them out with a slotted spoon or strainer (shown in the above photo) and immediately place them in cool water. Put the lid on the pot to keep the water hot.

The peaches shouldn’t be too hot to handle and the peel will slip right off. (If it doesn’t slip off easily try leaving the peaches in the hot water a few seconds more. Just don’t keep them in the water too long- you don’t want to cook them!)

This method also works for tomatoes!

Here is a little tip from me to you…

I peeled the peaches in a strainer that was placed over a bowl. This allowed the juice from the peaches to drip down into the bowl below.

You can compost the peel and bad spots from the peaches. I know people who also compost the pit but it never completely breaks down.

Pour the juice from the bowl into a jar and place it in the refrigerator. Continue to collect the juice as you process peaches.

This little jar of goodness will later be strained through a fine cloth and then put into a BIG jar to make Peach Sun Tea! 🙂

BONUS!!

I’m sure you could also collect the tomato juice and put it to good use as well.
